In this creative workshop you will learn the basics of printing simple monotypes (individual unique prints) using a gelli plate, brayer/roller and acrylic paints. It is an ideal opportunity for beginners to learn this wonderful printing method, but is also suitable for those who want to extend their skills and confidence.
No drawing skills are necessary for this process or workshop. Just your imagination! The gelli plate lends itself to creative play and experimentation and it is this relaxed and spontaneous approach that often leads to the happiest and most unexpected results.
In this workshop we will look at the work of several different artists who have used pattern as a key element in their art. We will NOT be attempting to copy them! However, by looking closer and studying the detail, they will act as a reference or 'jumping off' point for creating a selection of your own unique patterned and textured prints. These make wonderful collage material and are a great resource for creating paper patchworks.
• 09.50 Welcome - Coffee/tea and biscuits
• 10.00 Start
• 12.30 Lunch Break of approx 30 - 40 mins.
• 15.45 Finish
We will start with a basic introduction to tools and techniques and a demonstration to give you an overview of the potential creative fun and flexibility of this wonderful method of mono printing. I will have plenty of examples on hand for reference and inspiration.
We will discuss colour combinations and colour confidence and I will guide you on how to mix paint colours, before you begin printmaking to create different patterns and textures as I teach you a number of different techniques.
*This particular workshop also includes how to make your own simple foam stamp to take home. I will show you how to use this to create unique patterns using the gelli plate. We will also study the use of gold - pens, paint and gold leaf on the gelli plate.
Once you have built a collection of printed papers and under my guidance, you will have the option to begin creating a paper patchwork collage (time permitting) or continue printing and extending your collection to take home.
What’s Included
All equipment and materials you need for the workshop will be provided, but please note that the price does NOT include the purchase of equipment (the gelli plate, roller etc.) as part of your workshop.
