This listing is for Group A Dates Raku Workshop with the following dates and times. Please see a separate listing for the Group B Dates Raku workshop here, with slightly different dates and times. There will be a maximum of 8 people in each workshop group.
Dates for Group A : One Saturday half day morning on Saturday 30 August 10am - 12.30pm, when you will create your own hand coiled pots and one full day a fortnight later on Saturday 13 September 10am - 3.30pm , when you will return for specialist glazing of your pots and the raku firing in an outside kiln in our garden. If it rains, you will still be able to work undercover. This two session workshop schedule allows time in between for your pots to dry and an initial first firing in our inside kiln.
Tutor: The workshop be run by local cermacist Hilary Kemp, whose beautiful raku pots are on display and for sale in the gallery.
About Raku: Raku is a specialist form of ceramics, but this workshop is suitable for complete beginners to those who would like to experiment and expand their handmade ceramic skills.
The ancient technique of Raku originated in 16 th century Japan. It involves taking red hotpots from the gas kiln and putting them in sawdust or paper shreddings to create amazing and unpredictable effects. You will also be able to try using horsehair to create delicate surface patterns.
What to wear: Because you will be creating with clay and then near a very hot kiln, please wear old clothes that cover your legs and arms and sensible shoes or trainers.
What’s included: All tuition and materials on both days. Specialist quality clay as used by Hilary and suited for raku firing. Raku glazes and horsehair. Tea, coffee and biscuits on the outside firing day. You are welcome to bring your own packed lunch or the on site Tea Room will also be open for refreshments and light lunches.
Early booking is advised. This workshop only occurs during the summer months.
