Flights of Fancy : Origami FREE Community Workshop
FLIGHTS OF FANCY: Origami Cranes Community Workshop. #HereForCulture
Saturday 26 June
Times: 1pm-4pm
Alongside Haddenham Arts Centre James Marsh : Flights of Fancy exhibition, come along to the free drop-in family workshop and learn to make your own origami crane with HAC studio artist Laura Pearson-Clark (Art in the Burrow). Suitable for ages 7 - 99 yrs
Set up in the garden marquee, with Covid-19 safety measures in place, make a crane and then add it to our grand hanging display making a flock of these graceful birds. A second workshop day allows visitors to take part again and see the flock of cranes grow into a celebratory community display. If you are unable to take part on the days come and collect materials and instructions to make your crane at home to then hand in to join the HAC display at a later date.
Cranes disappeared from Britain 400 years ago after rigorous hunting and loss of habitat with the draining of marshland. With the careful management of habitat restoration the UK now has 160 cranes. Cranes in origami symbolise success and good fortune. Japanese legend has it if you make 1000 origami cranes you will receive eternal good luck and symbolises resilience and well-being.
Artist Laura Pearson-Clark exhibited 1000 handmade origami cranes back in 2018 at the Chequer Studio Ely. They took a year to make and marked World Mental Health Day and celebrated her recovery from Postnatal Depression after learning how to make the crane through an art therapy session provided by the NHS.
Drop-in workshops, no need to book (numbers will be limited to 30 at any one time), ages: 7-99! All materials included. The Communities origami cranes will be displayed throughout the summer season for visitors to return and view. If you are unable to take part on the days come and collect materials and instructions to make your crane at home to then hand in to join the HAC display at a later date.
